How to prevent the furniture from getting scratched when the cat jumps on it?

I just brought home a new cat for the first time. I am noticing that the furniture she jumps on already looks scratched. I have some brand new end tables and a coffee table in the living room that I don't want to get ruined. How can I prevent her from jumping on those? If I can't prevent that, is there a way to prevent it from getting scratched when she does jump on it? I would not declaw the cat so you guys can stop worrying about that!

  1. I own 2 cats (and 3 dogs)....when you learn how, let me know! Cats will be cats. In my opinion, if keeping your furniture brand new looking is your main concern, then owning animals isn't the best thing for you! Good Luck!
  2. spray bottle! they are fantastic! spraycat and tell him/her no everytime you catch it and he/she will learn not to get on the couch and tables
  3. DE-claw the kitties.
  4. Your options are limited. You should make sure the cat has a specific scratching post. That will help out immensely. If there's some tables you don't want scratched, cover them w/ a sheet until your cat gets accustomed to using the scratching post to take care of that need. Don't get your cat declawed, it's really quite cruel. It doesn't just remove the nail, it removes the first digit of the bone. It would be like cutting off the end joint of your fingers.
  5. Welcome to the world of pet-hood! To be honest, the only way to eliminate scratch marks is to get rid of the cat. Please DO NOT get the cat de-clawed. While a scratching post does work, when the mood hits the cat to scratch, it will.... so, learn to be a bit tolerant and forgiving. In a nut shell, there is no "humane" way of preventing a cat from occasionally scratching your furniture. I hope this helps,
  6. I really don't know why you are seeing scratch marks. When a cat makes a calculated jump, it does not extend its claws when it "lands". However, the claws may just need trimming; clip off the points. Some good furniture polish should remove the scratch marks.
  7. Most time jumping on or off will not leave scratch marks as the claws are retracted at the time. But trimming the nails weekly or using the SoftPaws nail caps will prevent damage. Read this about declawing. If you value your furniture more then the cat, please rehome the cat. http://maxshouse.com/Truth%20About%20Declawing.htm
  8. u can have her claws trimmed
